About Clear Drain

We are a small drainage firm working out of Castlecroft, in Wolverhampton. Clear Drain is a trading name of Midlands Simit Ltd.

We do two things: CCTV drain surveys and drain unblocking and jetting. We do not do repairs, relining or excavation, and we do not intend to start.

Why we do not do repairs

Almost every firm that will put a camera down your drain will also quote for fixing whatever it finds. The conflict is obvious once you see it: the person telling you how bad the problem is, is the person who gets paid to solve it.

We took the other route. Our report grades every section, sets out what is there and how bad it is, and stops. What you do next, and who you get to do it, is your business.

That means two things in practice. When we say something is failing, there is no sales motive behind it. And when a survey comes back with nothing wrong — which happens often — we have no reason to manufacture a problem to justify the visit.

What you actually get

  • Every section graded on the Drain Repair Book scale, A to E
  • Every defect coded to MSCC, the Manual of Sewer Condition Classification, and positioned in metres from the start of its run
  • A site plan of the system. For most properties this drawing has never existed
  • The full video
  • The report the same day, by NADC-certified surveyors, with the surveyor’s certification number on it

Our reporting software is WRc-approved and MSCC-compliant, which matters when the report has to satisfy a water authority, a solicitor or an insurer rather than just you.

We know this ground

Working out of Wolverhampton rather than travelling to it means we see the same failure patterns repeatedly, and they are regional.

Ground across the Black Country has been worked for coal, limestone, ironstone and fireclay for two hundred years, and a century of uneven settlement since is why displaced joints are the commonest structural defect we log — most of all in Bilston and Tipton, where the working was shallowest. Post-war estates across the region, and nearly all of Telford and Redditch, are built on pitch fibre, a bitumen pipe that deforms rather than cracks and cannot be repaired in place. Wolverhampton and Kidderminster sit on sandstone that lets fine material wash out through an open joint until the pipe settles into the void behind it. Droitwich has ground movement from brine extraction that behaves like nothing else we see.

That is not marketing. It is what determines whether a defect on your survey is urgent or not.

Straight answers

We will tell you a realistic time when you ring, and a price before we come out. If we get to site and find the blockage is on a shared run past your boundary — which since the 2011 private sewer transfer means it is Severn Trent’s, not yours — we will say so rather than invoice you for it.
