Why people here ask for a survey

A septic tank or treatment plant. The run between the house and the tank fails like any other pipe, and it is worth ruling that out before anyone talks about replacing the tank.

Why drains fail in Bridgnorth

Most recurring problems here trace back to ground conditions rather than to anything that was put down the drain. This is why.

A town in two halves, a hundred feet apart. High Town sits on a sandstone cliff above Low Town and the Severn, and the drainage has to get from one to the other. Steep runs scour themselves clean and then discharge into flat sections that do not, so deposits collect at the change of gradient – often a long way from the property that noticed anything.

Sandstone, and what it does to a leak. The cliff and the ground behind it are free-draining sandstone. Fine material washes out through an open joint over years, leaving voids that let the pipe drop further – so a small defect here deteriorates faster than the same defect on clay.

An old core and a rural hinterland. The historic centre has drainage of every era, much of it unrecorded; the surrounding properties towards Worfield, Quatt and Astley Abbotts are frequently on septic tanks rather than a public sewer.

Which is why we would rather put a camera down the run than tell you what is probably wrong with it.

What actually blocks a drain in Bridgnorth

Almost everything we pull out of a domestic drain falls into a short list, and most of it should never have gone down there in the first place.

Wet wipes. The single commonest cause we attend. They do not break up the way paper does, and once one snags on a rough joint the rest build against it until the bore is gone.

Nappies and sanitary items. They are designed to swell. A drain that will pass one will block on the third.

Fat, oil and grease. Poured down warm, set solid cold. On a WV15 and WV16 run with any flat section it catches everything that follows.

Roots. Not a housekeeping problem – a structural one. Roots get in through a joint that has already opened, and then behave like a net.

A pipe that is already damaged. If a run blocks repeatedly in the same place, the cause is usually the pipe rather than what went into it.
