Victorian terraces on short-length clay. The older streets around the town centre, Priestfield and Spring Vale have a joint every metre or so – a great many opportunities for a run to step.

Post-war estates with pitch fibre. Stowlawn, Bunker’s Hill and the Lanesfield area came later, bringing a pipe that goes oval rather than cracking and blocks progressively more often as it does.

None of that is visible from the surface, which is why a camera settles in an hour what guesswork will not settle at all.
